Overview

This week-long project examined the relationship between business and design and how to apply creative skills towards social entrepreneurship.

Delfinus is an app pitch centered around advancing dolphin conservation efforts. It combines the delightful trend of using flight tracking apps as entertainment with the preexisting marketing strategies of "adopt-me" conservation packages.

Project objectives

1. Drive incentive to donate.

2. Spread awareness of issues surrounding dolphin exploitation.

Research

Exploitation & slaughter are hurting dolphin populations.

100,000+ dolphins are slaughtered annually. These hunts are unregulated, illegal, & unsustainable.

Why are dolphins hunted?

✦ Used as delicacies in cuisine and as fishing bait for sharks, crabs, etc.
✦ Lower dolphin populations = lower competition for fishermen.
✦ Hunts are traditional for certain cultures.

Downsides to dolphin exploitation

Ecosystem equilibrium

Any man-made impact upsets the natural equilibrium of the ecosystem.

Endangered populations

Dwindles dolphin populations. Especially bad for endangered species.

Mental trauma

Surviving dolphins endure long lasting mental trauma from slaughterings.

Toxic meat

Dolphin meat has toxic levels of mercury & is also ridden with disease.

Organizations involved in dolphin rescue & rehabilitation

✦ Non-profit organizations dedicated towards anti-captivity dolphin welfare.
✦ Goals include freeing dolphins from captivity into the wild/rehabilitation centers, and bringing awareness to slaughterings held in places such as Taiji Japan & Peru.

Why an app?

✦ Condensed accessible information right in your hands!
✦ Has potential to be interactive to attract more user attention.

Gamification!

Inspiration

1. Plane-tracking apps

Intended use: track where your flight is.

Trendy use: people are watching random planes for fun. The flights are unrelated to them, it’s just interesting to watch where they go and what paths they take.

2. "Adopt-me" packages

✦ Dolphin adoption kits already exist and are in use by several organizations.

Final app

This was a 1 week long project. With more time, I would like to explore further iterations and potential screens this app may have.

Homepage: betting system

✦ Every day, the app prompts a question that asks the user to choose a “winner” between two dolphins in a certain category.

✦ Meant to incentivize people to use the app. Costs very little money to play:

✦ If you win X amount of rounds, you get a physical goodie bag in the mail.

Homepage: map

✦ Map displays general vicinity of dolphin(s).

✦ Tapping into a dolphin displays a quick information guide.

Swiping up will display a longer list of dolphins you follow or are near you [below].

Profile

✦ Displays amount you have donated in total.

✦ Displays dolphins you have "adopted" and are following.

User can tap into a dolphin to see what “tier” donator they are & general dolphin information.

Tier donations - gift ideas

Conservation news

✦ Has logos of who the app’s sponsors are.

✦ Users can take a test to see which organization would best match where they would like their money to go to.

✦ Recent news contains articles related to dolphin conservation.

Expected outcomes

✦ People will be more conscious about dolphin conservation practices.

✦ More donations will occur out of:

1. the desire to help make a difference.
2. the incentive of receiving physical "tier donations" gifts.
3. the in-"game" monetary betting mechanics.
