Duo Portable Hand Sanitizer & Air Purifier

MY ROLE

Product design

TIMEFRAME

Apr 2021 - May 2021

TOOLS

Solidworks
Keyshot

Overview

Crusty, dusty, musty habits die hard.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, increased attention has started to be given towards hygienic practices. More people have been taking action to guarantee air and hand cleanliness, especially in communal areas.

Project brief

✦ Final project for a Solidworks class that solely focused on learning the fundamentals of the software.

✦ Conducted solo preliminary research to influence my functions reasoning.

Goals

Personal Learning

Effectively learn Solidworks and create a vibrant product rendering.

Compact & Portable

Portability makes sanitization accessible in any environment.

Engaging

Appealing functions make sanitizing habits a more enjoyable activity.

Ease of Use

Sanitization is for everyone. Product should easy to use to promote accessibility.

The challenge

How might we make sanitization more convenient and accessible to better emphasize hygiene practices?

Final design

Research

2 common attributes that negatively affect personal health:

1. What you touch

✦ 80% of common infections are spread by hands.
✦ Current solutions: hand sanitizer, washing hands.

2. The space you occupy

✦ Better indoor air quality reduces the risk of pathogen transmission and improves breathing conditions.
✦ Current solutions: air purifiers, cleaning sprays/mists

New opportunity: combine hand sanitizers & air purifiers.

A way to combine the two:

Hypochlorous Acid

✦ When diluted, this acid becomes a non-toxic non-alcoholic sanitizing solution.
✦ Just as effective as conventional cleaners.
✦ Is already an alternative to hand sanitizer.
✦ No harmful fumes when in a gaseous state.
✦ Inexpensive.

Iteration process

Iterations 1 & 2

This part of the project consisted of sketching forms that could allow for the combination of hand sanitizers and air purifiers. This meant taking into consideration functions such as how someone would refill the product and where hypochlorous acid filters could fit.

User & class feedback

“Nice concept, but might be expensive if it's so curvy.”

- Female, 21

Make form minimalistic & less circular.

“It does not stand balanced on both axes”

- Female, 22

Place handle in center of product.

“Too many moving pieces is confusing and easy to break

- Male, 21

Limit moving pieces to handle & back.

“What if the on button rubs against my purse?”

- Female, 21

Place buttons in concave places.

Iterations 3

Next steps

✦ This was definitely was an exciting project to practice all of the Solidworks skills I was able to learn this semester, as the form was challenging enough with its rounded edges and minute details, but simple enough to practice many skills at once.

✦ I would love to revisit this project and user test it. Because this was a project that focused on creating 3D form and learning new software, user testing took more of a back seat.
